Army Whistleblower Who Wrote to McCain About Prisoner Abuses Dies at Age 42
NEWBERRY, Mich. (AP) — A former Military officer and Detroit native who reported in 2005 that armed forces prisoners in the Center East had been being crushed and abused by U.S. troopers has died.
Main Ian Fishback of Newberry, Michigan, died out of the blue Nov. 19, in accordance to his obituary from the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry. He was 42. No induce of dying was outlined.

Fishback wrote about the abuses in a letter to best aides of Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. John W. Warner of Virginia, in accordance to the newspaper.

Fishback and two other former members of the 82nd Airborne Division documented that prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq were assaulted, exposed to extraordinary temperatures, stacked in human pyramids and deprived of slumber in an exertion to extract intelligence from them, or just to amuse the troopers, The Times claimed.
Fishback also said Military superiors overlooked his issues.
“Despite my initiatives, I have been not able to get crystal clear, consistent responses from my management about what constitutes lawful and humane therapy of detainees,” Fishback wrote in the letter to McCain. “I am specific that this confusion contributed to a large array of abuses including loss of life threats, beatings, broken bones, murder, publicity to factors, serious pressured bodily exertion, hostage-using, stripping, slumber deprivation and degrading therapy. I and troops less than my command witnessed some of these abuses in each Afghanistan and Iraq.”
The allegations of abuse ultimately led the U.S. Senate to approve anti-torture laws in 2005.
Fishback’s spouse and children stated in a statement on the funeral home’s website that the group had supported him “through his new complicated instances.”
“He faced a lot of problems and lots of of us felt helpless,” the spouse and children wrote. “We tried to get him the assistance he necessary. It appears the procedure failed him completely and tragically. There are many concerns bordering his demise and the formal bring about of demise is mysterious at this time. We can assure you that we will get to the bottom of this. We will find justice for Ian, because justice is what mattered most to him.”
